Collect
Lord of all life and power, who through the mighty resurrection of your Son overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him: Grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, may reign with him in glory; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour, glory and might, now and in all eternity. Amen.
The First Reading: Acts 11: 1-18
And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them. But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying, I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me: Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat. But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth. But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven. And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me. And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house: And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter; Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved. And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptised with water; but ye shall be baptised with the Holy Ghost. Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God? When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
The Psalm: Psalm 148
Alleluia.
Praise the Lord from the heavens; ♦︎
praise him in the heights.
Praise him, all you his angels; ♦︎
praise him, all his host.
Praise him, sun and moon; ♦︎
praise him, all you stars of light.
Praise him, heaven of heavens, ♦︎
and you waters above the heavens.
Let them praise the name of the Lord, ♦︎
for he commanded and they were created.
He made them fast for ever and ever; ♦︎
he gave them a law which shall not pass away.
Praise the Lord from the earth, ♦︎
you sea monsters and all deeps;
Fire and hail, snow and mist, ♦︎
tempestuous wind, fulfilling his word;
Mountains and all hills, ♦︎
fruit trees and all cedars;
Wild beasts and all cattle, ♦︎
creeping things and birds on the wing;
Kings of the earth and all peoples, ♦︎
princes and all rulers of the world;
Young men and women,
old and young together; ♦︎
let them praise the name of the Lord.
For his name only is exalted, ♦︎
his splendour above earth and heaven.
He has raised up the horn of his people
and praise for all his faithful servants, ♦︎
the children of Israel, a people who are near him.
Alleluia.
The Second Reading: Revelation 21: 1-6
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.’ And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.
The Gospel Reading: John 13: 31-35
When he had gone out, Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, “Where I am going, you cannot come.” I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’
Post-Communion Prayer
Eternal God,
in word and sacrament
we proclaim your truth in Jesus Christ and share his life.
In his strength may we ever walk in his way,
who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Collect of the Word
Almighty God,
your glorified Son has called us
to love one another as he loves us:
in the power of the Spirit
enable us to fulfil his commandment
that we may be recognised as his disciples
and be prepared for that day
when you will dwell with us in the new Jerusalem.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
